Oscar’s affinity for stone carving may have originated in his teen years. He quickly developed a love for hunting arrowheads and unusual stones on farms and ranches in the Gatesville, Texas area where he grew up. One of his earliest "paid jobs" was hauling limestone rocks for neighboring farmers and ranchers. Farm and ranch work had an impact upon Oscar's life choices and he was subsequently, motivated to pursue an education in the Social Sciences.
In 2002, while meditating, Oscar had a small thought glide through his consciousness that he needed to carve stone. Having absolutely no artistic training or experience, he began a self-taught process of playing with the sculpturing of stone. Oscar feels that if any of his works bring an inspiration to others, it is simply the result of an intuitive process. His hand tools seem to glide through the stone, almost with a mind of their own. He is often as surprised as anyone else at the sculpture that emerges. Much of Oscar’s work focuses upon his own limitations and the daunting task of attempting to internalize an elusive spiritual existence.
Oscar is now retired after working 32 years, primarily with children with behavorial, psychological, and medical challenges. It seems that the more Oscar has learned, the less he seems to know. He now spends his time veggie gardening, sculpturing, traveling, and continually learning and relearning life's little lessons.
